Treating Triceps Tendonitis With PRP

Triceps Tendonitis is a very common musculoskeletal issues that I see in my patients almost weekly. It is characterized by inflammation or micro-tearing of the tendon at the back of your elbow. This typically causes pain that worsens when straightening your arm against resistance (such as during bench presses, push-ups, or heavy lifting).

When rest, ice, and physical therapy aren't enough, Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy offers a non-surgical way to promote genuine healing rather than just masking symptoms.

What is PRP and How Does It Work?

Because tendons have limited blood flow, they heal slowly on their own. PRP therapy overcomes this by using your body's own growth factors to kickstart recovery:

  1. Blood Draw: A small sample of your blood is drawn.

  2. Separation: The sample is spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors.

  3. Injection: The concentrated plasma is injected directly into the injured triceps tendon, stimulating tissue repair and collagen production over time.

Why Avoid Steroid Injections for Triceps Tendonitis?

While corticosteroid injections are commonly used for joint pain, they are generally not recommended for triceps tendonitis.

  • Tendon Weakening: Cortisone injections can break down collagen and weaken the tendon structure.

  • Rupture Risk: Repeated or even single steroid injections into the triceps tendon significantly increase the risk of a full tendon rupture, which requires major surgery to fix.

  • Temporary Relief Only: Steroids mask inflammation temporarily without repairing the damaged tissue.

Unlike steroids, PRP works to structurally repair the tendon over several weeks, offering a safer long-term solution.

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery begins before the procedure itself, as you will need to stop taking anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) one to two weeks prior to treatment. We are trying to create an inflammatory response with the platelets, so taking medications that are going to REDUCE inflammation is not recommended. During the first week after the injection, it is normal to experience mild soreness and localized swelling as the initial biological healing response takes hold, making rest and relative immobilization essential.

By weeks two through six, you will typically begin guided physical therapy focusing on gentle range-of-motion exercises and gradual strengthening. Tissue regeneration continues over the second to sixth months, leading to progressive pain reduction and a safe, full return to your normal athletic activities.
